Job Opening for 2021-22

Children's House Guide in Augusta, Georgia

Westabou Montessori School is a nonprofit, diverse farm school committed to social justice and creating equitable outcomes for children ages 3-12 in Harrisburg, an impoverished neighborhood in Augusta, Georgia. Our programs are growing with tremendous community support, and we are seeking a like-minded spirit to teach in our second Children’s House this coming year (Fall 2021-Summer 2022).

The ideal candidate would hold an AMI/AMS or IMC primary certificate, embody the “follow the child” mantra, and be committed to social justice and inclusivity. Prior to covid, 70% of everything the children ate in our food programs were grown, harvested, and prepared on-site by primary and elementary children. In a neighborhood where food scarcity prevails, our garden is instrumental in meeting the holistic needs of children and families and is part of the daily work of every classroom. All candidates must be comfortable working in an outdoor garden. Experience in gardening is a plus; willingness to learn is required.

Additional qualities we seek in a candidate include a background in social work, special education, or other related field. Families in our school represent every facet of diversity–religious, socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, LGBTQ+, etc. Candidates must also celebrate the gifts this kind of diversity brings to the lives of children. Nearly half of the children in our programs attend on an income-based scholarship, so a deep understanding of the complexities of poverty would be a great asset to any candidate seeking this position.

WMS offers a competitive salary with the benefit of a VERY low cost of living in our community. We offer ample training opportunities in Montessori pedagogy, trauma-informed care, self-care and wellness, and a variety of staff-requested topics. We are a close-knit staff who are deeply committed to our mission, and we work hard to support one another and each of the families in our program.

If you are interested in working with us, please send us your resume and a letter of introduction to Judy Heath, our Program Administrator, at judy.westaboumontessori@gmail.com.
